A truly fantastic weekend began with the Smooth Collie Club’s golden jubilee Ch show at Ashfordby Amateur Sport Club, which was easy to get to and appeared to be ideal for size, amenities, parking and exercising. The array of prizes, trophies, rosettes, plaques and other specials was excellent, indeed everything indicated that it was a special event. I wished that I had had more time to study the famous Smooth paintings, but at least I did see them, whereas as is usually as a judge I was not able to see the champions parade which I understand gave great pleasure to everyone. I felt the show did the organisers great credit. I know I shall leave out important people for I was not aware of the behind-the-scenes work which must have gone on for months before the show and of course on the day, but I must mention Mr Hayward, the chairman; Mrs J McGregor, secretary; Mrs L Chapman, treasurer; Mr Gibson, show manager; Mr P Sewell, chief steward; Miss D Moores, trophy steward; and Mrs M Foulston. I thank them and the whole committee for running such a happy, friendly show. It was good to see the president, the legendary Mrs Ada Bishop, watching everything carefully. There was an excellent entry of 96 Smooths and 47 Roughs although of course some were absent and 11 entered only in the champions parade. BIS was the Smooth b who had come over from Scandanavia, Int Ch Sandcastle’s Int Ch Sandcastle’s Storm Inateacup. RBIS was the Rough d, Ch Brooklynson from Rio and BP the Smooth Devern Fate A Compli. COLLIE (SMOOTH): MPD (2). 1 Hyde’s Londer Look Smart. Well grown s/w, good neck and shoulder, nice outline, well bodied, nicely proportioned head, with some strength in foreface and well carried ears, just inclined to knuckle over in front at the present; 2 Hayward’s Foxearth Londer Lladro. Litter brother but not the assurance yet. Quality head, good eye, generally well made with particularly good quarters. PD (3). 1 Tillier’s Southcombe Set A Flame for Cromarty. Nice headed s/w, good eye, pleasing neck and outline, shapely hindquarters, needs a little more body development to fulfil his promise. BPD; 2 Forbes’ Pelghart Pied Piper. Had the body and rib but not as firm in front and feet, typical head, I would like better tail carriage; 3 Thorne’s Pelghart Pipers Gold. JD (5). 1 Purvey’s Freejack The Highlander. Tri, lovely temperament and scored in movement, nice body and width in thighs, pleasing bone, legs and feet, good tail, could be a little more of him; 2 Hayward’s Foxearth Frenchy. Well bodied blue merle, good neck and forehand, elbows well in, nice nicely balanced head, could have given a bit more both standing and moving but in no way nervous; 3 P Pied Piper. ND (3). 1 F The Highlander; 2 P Pied Piper. PGD (5). 1 Gadd’s Foxearth Oliver’s Footprint to Chicnoir. Tall, elegant shaded s/w in v nice condition, pleasing outline, good legs and feet, could be a little better in eye; 2 Fulwood’s Darsign Minstrell Blu. Attractive blue merle, lovely character, nice front, bone legs and feet, could be a little stronger in second thigh; 3 Wallis’ Norfield Soul Mate. LD (5). 1 Griffith’s Alopex Highland Fling. Handsome tri in lovely coat and condition, pleasing head, full of expression, good forehand, nice legs and feet, good shape, nice tail; 2 Evan’s Manordeifi Smart Guy at Southcombe. Well grown s/w, good head and eye, pleasing body and rib, good strong hindquarters, could have put more into his movement but a v pleasing well balanced d; 3 Clark’s Glencorrie Be Worthy for Astrellita. OD (12). Excellent class. 1 and CC MacGregor’s Ch Moon Walker from Misstoff. Excellent tri, gave his all moving and standing, fully mature, v good body, rib and depth of brisket, splendid hindquarters, well muscled, good head, eyes, ears and expression, in good coat; 2 Hayward’s Ger/Lux/Int Ch Foxearth High Frequency. I loved him too. Top quality tri, good head, well bodied, good front and hindquarters, hung back a little on the move; 3 Morna’s and Ratcliffe’s Foxearth Jeans Forever. VD (9). 1 Howe’s Ch Rowvale Rainbow Warrior. I was v impressed with this 9 yr old blue roan, he is still a v sound, good moving d, has kept his shape and was just right in body, coat and condition, full of vitality and v expressive. RCC; 2 Saunt’s Rowvale Moon Rocker of Boothwood. Litter brother, v nice tri, also looked well for his age, still a good mouth, nice bone, enjoyed himself; 3 Croman’s Hilltarn Steel River of Cromarty. MPB (2). 1 Hill’s Devern Fat A Compli. Delightful tri, good head, eye and ears, v well balanced, feminine but assertive, v nice for make and shape, moved well. BPIS; 2 Hayward’s Foxearth Londer Leone. Well made s/w, shapely, good front, limbs and hindquarters, promising but needs more experience to make more of herself. PB (3). 1 Gibson’s Pelghart Pure Gold. Showy s/w, pleasing body and rib, I would like a little more bone and a steadier front but v typical; 2 Hill’s Devern Electra. I liked this tri, she has a good temperament and is well made but her bite has to improve. JB (4). 1 Thorne’s Shulune Lady of Rohan. Attractive s/w, typical head and ears, good over the loin and rump but carrying a little extra weight; 2 Purvey’s Freejack Oh Mi Mi. Rather apprehensive on the day but nice outline with nothing much wrong with her growth and shape and as she gets used to the show ring will present a different picture. NB (3). 1 Palmer’s Darsign Crystal Chandalier for Apkara. Feminine, shapely merle, pleasing head and eye, good neck, nicely balanced but needs to firm in front movement; 2 P Pure Gold; 3 F Oh Mi Mi. I liked this tri v much, a good balance between substance and elegance, good bone, pleasing body and rib, not in the best coat but body condition excellent; 2 Chapman’s Sharidon Luck Be A Lady. Wonderful tri, full of quality, lovely head, v good eyes, held her well placed ears well, v good front, legs and feet, so good in bone, well made quarters, well bodied, good tail, she went round the ring with reach and drive holding herself proudly. Old favourite of mine, looked really well for 10 1/2 yrs, has retained her shape, soundness and showmanship, good head and expression, well made quarters; 2 Speding’s and Smedley’s Ch Foxearth Tabsolutely Fab for Antoc. Another favourite of mine, still v typical at 9 1/2 yrs, good well chiselled head, has lost a bit of the will to show but well bodied and feminine; 3 French’s Frendet Fantasia. Feminine, good head and eye, lovely shape, good bone, limbs and body, in lovely fresh coat; 2 H Gentle Persuasion. Well bodied for 10 mths old, good over the rump and quarters, spoils the overall picture by carrying her tail too gaily but lovely temperament, nice p coat. LB (6). 1 Smedley’s Antoc Diamond Days JW. Pretty blue merle, v nice foreface and eyes, well bodied, nice size, feminine, not in the best of coats and rather lazy in ears on the day; 2 Steven’s Boughlee After Midnight. I liked this nice sized feminine tri, pleasing neck, shoulders and outline, could have held her tail better and is a touch narrow in front; 3 Pettit’s Myriehewe Ma-Biche.
