Considering that the Smooth Collie ch show was the day before I was v pleased to have an entry of 51 Smooth collies, with only three absent across the board. A mixed entry with a vast diversity of type, we almost have a division between the Import & English lines. We must always remind ourselves that there really is only one standard & this should be adhered to at all times or else we will lose the important essence of our breed. BOB & RBIS Whittinghams Southcombe Society Girl. This b literally came from nowhere so to speak, unknown to me she entered the ring & I was immediately taken by her overall balance & type. A steady show girl who was in unison with her handler, she was most attentive & alert without being over shown. Clean wedge head of correct length with gd foreface, flat skull & well shaped dark eyes, this with correct ear set gave a dreamy collie expression. She shows strength, yet with the elegance one likes to see in our breed. What impressed me was her construction & condition. An excellent front with gd fore chest (something that is lacking in our breed). Well muscled hind quarters with second thigh & strong well let down hocks, gd length of neck set in correct lay back of shoulder, this with a deep chest & well sprung ribs gave the correct amount of angulation with nothing over exaggerated. In fact she was a picture of a true smooth collie, nothing flashy just an honest down to earth collie. This was her first CC & I am sure will not be her last. Well done to her v excited owner, (hope you found your way home). RBCC McGregor’s Southcombe Sophisticate at Rowvale. Won a gd class here as I was spoilt for choice in this class, with some v nice young ladies looking for the top spot, I am re they will change places many times. Could not overlook this lovely b as her construction is second to none, & as always from this kennel showmanship & condition speaks volumes, she has a beautiful neck & shoulder, with gd topline & well muscled hindquarters, excellent bend of stifle & strong well let down hocks with tight well padded feet. Coat texture correct & she is so black against the white of her collar that she almost dazzles the eye. Her head handles well & she has beautiful dark well placed eyes & this with correct ear placement gives a lovely expression, in the challenge it was hard to decide between these two lovely tricolours, In my opinion they will both gain their titles with ease. The nod going to my overall winner who I felt was a touch more feminine. DCC & BOS was McGregor’s Ch Moonwlker from Misstoff. What a star... this d is so collective & one can only admire his stunning outline & showmanship, One of the best smooth males for a long time to grace our ring & one who has done the breed proud by being placed in the big groups at major championship shows drawing attention to our lovely breed who are quite often overlooked in the groups. Immaculate as usual & constructed to fit the standard, of gd size & coat with correct harsh texture. This d has a beautiful arch of neck set in gd lay of shoulder & most important he has a gd fore chest & excellent front. Correct depth of chest with well sprung ribs & gd body length with correct tail set gives an overall picture of balance that shows strength & nobility. I would prefer a slightly darker & better eye shape but this is of no consequence to the overall grandeur of this lovely d. In the challenge was for some reason rather reluctant to move, whilst the b gave it her best. RDCC was Evan’s Southcombe Sunset Shadow. Sired by the CC winner & carries many of his sire’s virtues. A v handsome sable d who shows strength but is not coarse in any way as he has a refined head & lovely expression coming from correct eye & ear placement. Gd stop & well filled foreface gd underjaw & strong teeth with correct bite & gd lip line. Most impressive front with excellent lay back of shoulder & gd upper arm, strong back of gd length & well muscled hind quarters. Gd bend of stifle & strong hocks enabled him to move correctly on tight well padded feet. A masculine well presented d of gd size be made a v pleasing picture. BP was Evan’s Southcombe She’s The One. This v pretty sable & white b shows much promise for the future, as she has all the right essentials, lovely shape with correct hind angulation gd bone & lovely tight feet made for a v pleasant picture. Liked her head type & lovely dark eye’s, giving a sweet expression. Neck & shoulder correct with gd spring of rib & correct body length with well set tail. She was constructed well & this showed in movement as she covered the ground with effortless ease, should have a bright future. BV was French’s Frendet Fantasia. I haven’t seen this b for some time & was pleased with the way she has matured in fact she looked a picture standing & on the move. Her head has matured well & she has a beautiful expression coming from well shaped dark eye’s, clean head with gd stop & foreface & well set ears. A b that has been slow to mature but now coming to her best & she moves with drive giving gd ground coverage, It wouldn’t come as a surprise if she does not do some serious winning now she can show what she can do. DOGS: V (5). 1 What a nice class of oldies, topped by Leach’s Ch Hilltarn Hyperion, blue merle who can still strut his stuff & retains the essence that is the Smooth Collie. This comes from gd body lines & sound hindquarters, having correct bend of stifle strong hocks & gd feet. Head has not grown course & he still has a kind intelligent expression that is so important in the breed, carries his ears well & is attentive & in unison with his handler, coat has thickened over the yrs but at 10 yrs he is still well muscled & in excellent condition, a true credit to the breed. In the challenge for BV the b just pipped him to the post with her overall vitality; 2 French’s Delmbush Crackerjack at Frendet JW. Another blue merle liked his head & construction & he was in super coat of excellent texture. Gd length to the head correct stop & well filled muzzle. Strong back gd hindquarters & gd bend of stifle made a pleasing picture, could be more positive on the move; 3 Will’s Merland Mystery Man Of Jarlana. P (2). 1 Hindes, Chicnoir Sea Biscuit. Well constructed young sable/white who has the makings of a v nice d, liked his head & lovely dark eye’s but his ears at this moment are rather low set & heavy, if this changes, then, in the not too distant future we will have a sable male that could be most useful to the breed. He has an excellent tight jacket that is a beautiful colour & with his white markings is v pleasing to the eye; 2 French’s Chicnoir Sea Fox at Frendet, was most surprised to see that he is full brother to the winner. On the day his head did not please & I hope will alter as he is at such a raw stage in his development but he lacks substance & showmanship & he must improve in movement. J (3). 1 Hindes, Chicnoir Ice Breaker, a v well constructed tricolour spoilt by being too fat on the day, this really spoilt his movement in the front because his hind action was v strong with plenty of drive. He has a gd shoulder & upper arm placement. well off for bone & he has gd tight well padded feet. Liked his head & expression & he has v neat well carried ears. Coat of correct texture & close fitting; 2 C Sea Fox at F. PG (5). 1 Moore’s Manordeifi Solar Eclipse, gd size tricolour & definitely all male. Pleasing head & expression, gd neck & strong shoulder with gd upper arm. Gd fore chest with well sprung rib, this with correct body length gave the picture of a True collie, one who could work if needed. He has strong hindquarters & well let down Hocks which enabled him to give gd ground coverage, in excellent coat & condition; 2 Benton’s Tentola Smooth Operator of Oakville, on entering the ring thought he would be my winner but on closer inspection preferred the outline & substance of my winner. Liked his head & lovely dark eyes, in gd coat & condition & he has gd length To the body, shown in super condition; 3 Hinde’s Chicnoir Snow Wolfe. L (5). 1 Hindes’ Chicnoir Best Mate. One I have admired from the ringside many times, when handled he has a v clean wedge head & I loved his intelligent kind expression, I should imagine that he is a v nice d to own. Body of gd construction with every Thing in the right place, liked his outline he makes a v elegant picture, he has gd Bone & lovely tight well padded feet, just needs a little more time as he is at the raw Juvenile stage in his development & he needs to be a bit more positive on the move Patience is needed here, as this d has the best to come & when he matures will be Sure to gain his title; 2 Moore’s Manordiefi Sergeant Pepper. What a lovely d, so male & such gd bone & substance throughout, excellent shoulder & deep chest, well sprung ribs & in beautiful condition, head of correct pattern with gd stop & the most divine dark well shaped eye’s, what a shame that he has heavy ears as he is a d of such beauty & this did spoil the overall appearance for me; 3 Mckendrick’s Alopex Conversation Peace at Wesanya. O (3). 1 McGreggor’s Ch Moonwalker From Misstoff CC & BOS; 2 Evans’s Southcombe Sunset Shadow. RCC; 3 Dindes Chicnoir Quartermaster. BITCHES: V (3). 1 French’s Frendet Fantasia BV; 2 Purvey’s Freejack A Kind Of Magic. Gd neck & shoulder & in gd condition. Nice head type but would prefer a sweeter expression, gd confirmation & sound on the move; 3 White’s Dancerwood Dollar Girl. P (4). 1 Evan’s Southcombe She’s The One, BP; 2 McGreggor’s Foxearth Flaunt It For Rowvale, superb colour blue merle, v pretty & so feminine, lovely head & expression, neat ears carried well, gd body shape & well angulated, a little short on the leg for me, but nevertheless a v striking youngster; 3 White’s Chicnoir Sea Spray. J (5). 1 Whittingham’s Southcombe Society Girl CC & BOB RBIS; 2 White’s Chicnoir Sea Spray, V pretty sable & wite, clean head & lovely dark expressive eyes, gd neck & shoulder & gd top line, in lovely coat of gd colour. Would like to see more positive movement; 3 Moore’s Manordiefi Scheherazade. PG (1). 1 Clark’s Derbypark Starstruck. Pretty tricolour not in her best bib & tucker but still pleasing to the eye, has a feminine outline & clean head & sweet expression, gd spring of rib & nice sweep over the loin, still at the raw stage but should mature well. L (9). 1 McGreggor’s Southcombe Sophisticate at Rowvale RCC; 2 Spedings, Antoc Fascination, this b really surprised me at how much she has come on as she is maturing into a v feminine elegant lady, clean wedge head & dark eye. In superb condition & so well muscled, she has been slow to mature & now things are Beginning to take shape will soon trouble the best; 3 Hyde’s Foxearth Future Magic. O (4). 1 Hyde’s Ch Foxearth Fondant, v feminine sable b, I have often admired from the ringside, she has the most beautiful expression coming from a lovely dark well shaped eye sound in body & movement & a worthy champion, she has strong front & gd bone throughout, she looked rather matronly on the day & this spoilt the overall balance of her outline, excellent coat both in colour & texture & as always she was in complete unison with her handler. Lovely b; 2 Hinde’s Ch Snuggletooth Flurry’s Filly, Lovely Champion, so well made with everything in the right place, & a superb coat that is so harsh to the touch. V pretty head & darkest of eyes with neat, well placed ears gives a v feminine expression, shown & handled well; 3 Mckendrick’s Hilltarn High Tide at Wesanya.
