The new venue was quite straight forward to find, thanks to the easy to follow directions in the schedule. A bright and airy hall with a good atmosphere which everyone, including the dogs, seemed to enjoy, despite the cold! I consider it a great honour to have been invited to judge this show and an absolute delight to have so many lovely Smooth Collies to choose from. Although it’s a good many years since we have owned a Smooth, we have lovely memories connected with it, especially of our very first home-bred male gaining his title and BIS at this club’s very firt Champ show in 1979, under the notable doyenne Mrs Kaye Alexander. It has always been a rocky road for the Smooth with fewer litters and options to breed on with, It seems not that type is more varied but quality is levelling out again and in greater depth. Temperaments, bar one or two, were excellent as was coat quality and mouths. DOGS: P 1 Alopex Highland Fling. Tri 11mths excellent style and outline, beautiful angulation and substance, quality head, well set dark eyes, good expression, ears well set and used but a shade light, moved free and true, excellent tail; 2 Foxearth Blue Jeans Forever; 3 Chicnoir Sea Biscuit. J 1 Manordeifi Smart Guy At Southcombe. S/w 17mths just fell for this “guy”, has mo much quality and personality and no doubting his gender, excellent clean and balanced head lines of the type that can only smooth out and get even better with maturity, well set dark eyes, excellent ears, excellent neck and front, nicely angulated with superb bone and good feet, strong back and loin sweeping into an excellent well angled and let down rear, thick, well carried tail of correct length, he moved with style and a rhythmic power and precision which made my hair stand, my notes finish by saying, a lovely, lovely d. A new one to me and in the challenge, against strong competition, he pulled out all the stops and with a glint in his eye, took the CC. Later I was told it was his second, I’m certain more will follow; 2 A Highland Fling; 3 Snuggletooth Oliver’s Twist Via Chicnoir. N 1 Darsign Minstrel Blue. B/m beautiful colour and markings, balanced head, good skull and foreface, dark well placed eyes, good neck and top line, slightly smaller male but balanced, moved well behind but uncoordinated in front; 2 Southcombe Sinclair. PG 1 Devern Blue Horizon. 4yr old male of excellent colour, beautiful head, clean and well balanced, filled foreface, good chin, clean under jaw& lip line, beautifully set eyes with a sweetness of expression and excellent ears, deep well developed body in firm condition with good substance, outline and angulation, moved free but sadly his tail is his downfall; 2 S Sinclair. L 1 Foxearth Falutin. 18mth s/w outstanding head qualities with all the features the standard asks for, well balanced d with good outline, angulation and substance, dark eyes and excellent ears when he uses them, unfortunately, he prefers to squint and grin! Seemed a bit apprehensive of the floor which may have accounted for his rather wide and uncoordinated movement today; 2 Chicnoir Best Mate; 3 Norfield Tri Star. O 1 Ch Foxearth Flash Past. Quality s/w with excellent outline and balance, superb headpiece, filled foreface, flat skull and clean cheeks, dark well set eyes, perhaps a fraction small and excellent ears, excellent neck, top line and angulation, although he has a well developed body, firm muscle and generally good substance, I would have liked a little more bone through the middle section of foreleg, moved soundly and free with well carried tail, another lovely d whose performance today, like that of the Junior winner, was impeccable and it was a close, tough decision. RCC; 2 Sharidon Touch Of Frost; 3 Dark Motif From Mistoff. V 1 Southcombe Scotch On the Rocks. 7yr old s/w well made d, quality head, good eyes, expression and ears, excellent neck and front, strong top line, body and rear, well angled and in excellent coat, moved sound and free, one of the more positive; 2 Rowvale Moon Rocket Of Boothwood; 3 Ch Rowvale Rainbow Chaser. BITCHES: MP 1 Southcombe She’s The One. Excellent quality all through, feminine head, good eyes and ears, excellent outline, good angulation and bone, moved soundly. P 1 Alopex Confetti Blue/ B/m 11mths excellent quality and type, head handles well, good expression from dark well set eyes and good ears, excellent neck and body proportions, good angulation and substance, moved easy and true. BPIS; 2 Foxearth Flaunt It For Rowvale; 3 Foxearth Fluorescence At Molloney. J 1 Southcombe Society Girl. Tri top quality all through, alone here, but a strong contender in the final challenge, so well made and typical smooth, excellent neck and front, well off for bone and body, well angled and let down, balanced, feminine head with good eyes and ears, enthusiastic on the move, which was sound and true. N 1 S She’s The One; 2 Foxearth Fatal Beauty At Yeldust; 3 F Fluorescence At Molloney. PG Hilltarn Valentine JW. Sadly out of coat but has great qualities, really beautiful feminine head, dk, well set eyes and excellent ears, superb outline, reachy neck, strong top line, well angulated with good body and substance, strong legs and good bone, moved most positive and true; 2 Sharidon Luck Be A Lady; 3 Foxearth Flicker Of Hope. L 1 Devern Dark Mistress. Tri excellent type overall, superb head qualities, beautiful expression from well shaped and set eyes and excellent ears which she never stops showing, mature body with good outline and substance, free mover but rear needs top be stronger; 2 Foxearth Future Magic; 3 Glencorrie Begorgeous. O This was a strong class of top quality girls. 1 Southcombe Sophisticate At Rowvale. CC, BOB and BIS. Tri with the quality and type overall which pleases me. Beautiful outline with style and elegance, head is clean and balanced, filled in foreface, with flat skull, sweet eyes and excellent ears, reachy neck enhanced by huge white collar, strong back and loin, well angled front and rear, good depth of body and substance all through, standing on good legs and feet, moved sound and free, in the challenge with the d she had the edge on maturity and finish; 2 Ch Foxearth Castles In The Sky. RCC; 3 Ch Alopex Silverstone. V 1 Ch Foxearth Farah. Oldest favourite of mine, gave her her first Cc as a junior, still so beautiful, time has been kind and has matured her with the elegance of a Queen, retains all her qualities and tyle, supple and eager to go.
